Senators urge Hegseth to consider religious exemption to military facial hair ban

The Secretary of War declared the ‘era of unprofessional appearance’ over, but some lawmakers have claimed the rule would have unintended consequences for Jewish, Muslim and Sikh service personnel

A group of Democratic senators have urged US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to reconsider his proposed ban on military personnel growing facial hair amid concerns of the impact the new rule would have on religious soldiers.

Hegseth, a devout Christian who has openly praised the Crusades, confirmed that he would implement the prohibition in September.

"We don’t have a military full of Nordic pagans,” he declared, adding: “Today, at my direction, the era of unprofessional appearance is over.

“No more beardos. The age of rampant and ridiculous shaving profiles is done.
