A gunman who attacked a synagogue in Michigan has been shot dead, a local sheriff told reporters.
There were no injuries to staff or children at the attached pre-school, Oakland County officer Michael Bouchard said.
According to reports, the suspect's vehicle rammed the doors of the building, injuring one security guard.
The vehicle was reportedly then seen being driven down the hallway inside the building.
Other guards at the synagogue engaged the suspect in gunfire and shot him dead.
The attacker’s vehicle caught fire, and smoke could be seen rising from the temple as dozens of police and emergency vehicles responded to the scene.
This incident is being investigated as a targeted act against the Jewish community, Jennifer Runyan, FBI special agent in charge of the Detroit office, told the media.
All nearby schools and houses of worship had been told to shelter in place while police respond to the incident at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Detroit News reported.
Officials urged the public to stay away from the area and said more information would be released as it became available.
The synagogue, which is the biggest Reform shul in the US, is located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road, west of Orchard Lake Road.
“We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel. Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown. We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time,” the Jewish Federation of Detroit said in a statement.
I am horrified to hear the news coming out of Michigan.

Dozens of police and emergency vehicles from across Oakland County rushed to the scene early on Thursday afternoon.
Temple Israel is one of multiple synagogues across West Bloomfield. Its current campus was built in 1980 and expanded in 1989. It includes an early childhood centre and a religious school for kids in preschool through 12th grade.
Donald Trump said in a statement: "We want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all the people in the Detroit area following the attack on the Jewish synagogue," he said, adding that he's been fully briefed on the situation.
The president called the incident a "terrible thing" and added, "we're going to get right down to the bottom of it".
"It's absolutely incredible that things like this happen," he said.
Officials in New York City and Los Angeles said they were increasing police presence around Jewish synagogues, schools and cultural centres after the incident in Michigan.
There have been at least seven incidents targeting diaspora synagogues this month, including the Michigan attack.
