There was one drink that in particular captured the spirit of Limmud Festival this year, Proud beer.
Some of the proceeds of sales go to LGBTQ causes, while it was served only after receiving rabbinical clearance for kashrut.
Brewers of the limited edition India pale ale donate 20p from every bottle sold to LGBTQ+ charities.
It was offered at a couple of events during Limmud - a “Queer beer and shiur” session at the pre-festival Shabbaton and later at Laviot’s pub quiz on Sunday night.
Laviot, a new organisation for queer Jewish women, was launched earlier in summer this year.
Laviot co-founder Oli Davidson explained she first came across the drink when she went to see the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, “where it was on sale, which was the week before Laviot launched.
“I immediately got in touch with Proud beer to see if we could arrange something between them and Laviot but we haven't really had an opportunity until Limmud. We thought it fit fantastically with Limmud's values and, for Laviot, it was an excellent opportunity to connect with the wider LGBT+ community and we were proud to enable the support of such a great charitable initiative.”
Limmud explained it could only offer Proud beer if the ingredients were kosher. So Laviot put its producer in touch with an official from the London Beth Din in order to approve its kashrut first.
