Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis has said that visibly Jewish people are not always safe in the UK following today’s stabbing attack in Golders Green.

He also called on the “silent community” within the British public to condemn the violence and voice support for British Jews, saying that an attack on the Jewish community was an attack on the whole nation.

Speaking to the JC near the site of the attack, in which two members of the Jewish community were injured, Chief Rabbi Mirvis said: “On this very road, close to this very point, two people who are visibly Jewish were attacked because they were visibly Jewish. What that means is Jewish people are not safe all the time.”

He added that while many visibly Jewish people do walk around London and the country with a kippah or a Magen David without issue, “to categorically say, every Jew is safe in this country… in the light of what happened today [and] in the wake of previous events, that is not the case.”
