Thousands of Iranians gathered outside Downing Street on Sunday to call for what they hope will be the downfall of the Islamic Republic and chanted: “US, Israel, thank you, thank you.”
There were already tangible successes to celebrate. The US-Israeli strikes that began on Saturday morning had killed the much-hated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as a number of other senior regime figures, including military chiefs.
People danced, uncorked Champagne and raised the pre-Islamic Revolution flag that has long been a symbol of defiance against the brutal regime.
Iranian anti-regime activist Lily Moo, who has given speeches at nearly every London anti-regime rally since the uprising against the dictatorship began in December, spoke of her joy. “It is the cheers and encouragement that will shake the world... as we dance here today.
“It is a celebration... it is an act of unity... and it means Iran.
“No more ayatollah down with all the mullahs,” she chanted.

She went on to speak about her hope that Iran's Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, who has been living most his life in exile, could return to take back the country that the ayatollah took over in 1979.
“Pahlavi means a future full of light and a future full of prosperity as it is the legacy that was left behind...
“For the past 50 years our country – our beloved Iran – has suffered darkness... and for years the world has stood silent and watched. But today we stand glorious; today with broken hearts over the blood that is spilt on the streets of Iran, we stand with hope and we will fight and we will take our country back.”

Deputy Leader of Reform UK Richard Tice, who spoke at a Iranian dissident London rally last month, also addressed the crowd.
He spoke of the courage of the London protesters but said: “The people who know what courage really is are the people of Persia.
“Let us remember at this time – this momentous moment in history – let us remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
“When I stood here a few weeks ago, thousands and thousands were paying this ultimate price.

“We must never ever forget them. We must thank them because this victory – this freedom – it is their freedom.
“We should thank them forever more.”
Tice went on: “The other people we should thank is the leadership of the US and the president of the US and the leadership of Israel – thank you.
"I see the courage of leadership to take difficult decisions.”
For millions of Iranians in Iran and around the world, this is being seen as the beginning of the end of the draconian rule that has blighted their lives for the last 47 years.
Despite it only being the second day of what many pray will be a toppling, and US President Donald Trump saying that the conflict could drag on for four weeks, an air of optimism was palpable at Sunday’s gathering.
