An Ofsted inspection of a Bristol secondary school which called off a visit from a pro-Israel, Jewish MP has found the institution is “politically impartial”.
Bristol Brunel Academy earlier this month scrapped a planned talk by Damien Egan, MP for Bristol North East and member of Labour Friends of Israel, after pressure from pro-Palestine activists.
The NEU's Bristol branch posted at the time of the cancellation: "MP Damian Egan’s planned school visit .. this Friday has been cancelled after concerns were raised by the NEU trade union staff group, parents and local constituents.
“This is a clear message: politicians who openly support Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza are not welcome in our schools.”
The Osted visit came after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that those who prevented the visit should be “held to account”.
Inspectors looking at areas such as political impartiality spoke to a total of 135 staff members and 143 parents, all of whom were “overwhelmingly positive” about the school.
The Ofsted report published today reads: “Leaders at this school ensure political impartiality in the curriculum and teaching.”
Inspectors also surveyed pupils at the academy and found evidence that “no discrimination is tolerated".
The scandal erupted after Steve Reed revealed Jewish Labour Movement conference: “I have a colleague who is Jewish, who has been banned from visiting a school - refused permission to visit a school in his own constituency - in case his presence inflames the teachers. It’s an absolute outrage that that could have possibly ever happened.”
