Health Secretary Sajid Javid extended his Chanukah greetings early this year as he reflected on the "miracle" of the festival of lights which begins this Sunday.

The cabinet minister also urged the community to remain vigilant in the fight against Covid-19 over the holidays.

Mr Javid said: “I want to wish everyone celebrating a Happy Chanukah. This is a time to reflect on the miracle of Chanukah and thanks to the modern scientific miracle of the vaccine, we are able to gather with family and friends, to share these special moments with our loved ones.

"However, the pandemic isn’t over, and I want everyone to do everything they can to stay safe this Chanukah."

The giant menorah in Trafalgar Square is set return this week, with a candle to be lit each day of Chanukah to illuminate the London night-sky.

The government recently changed its official guidance from twice-weekly lateral flow tests to recommend getting checked for the virus before a “period of high risk” such as mixing in crowded and enclosed spaces. All those aged 40 to 49 are now eligible for a booster jab six months after their second dose.
