The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) has said claimed British politicians have not taken note of the “alarm” raised by the US Jewish community after several political figures celebrated Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral win on Wednesday.
CAA told the JC: “The American Jewish community and its organisations have expressed alarm at the rise of Zohran Mamdani.
"His record would appear to give them reason for concern.
"It is depressing that none of this has given some leading British politicians any pause. It's as if the EHRC investigation into antisemitism in Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party has taught them nothing."
Corbyn, who is now the co-leader of the new far-left Your Party said: "Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani. You ignited a grassroots campaign, built on the radical idea that everyone deserves to live in dignity.
Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, praised Mamdani, saying: "Inspirational campaign and victory for Zohran Mamdani in NYC. Lessons for progressives the world over."
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said of Mamdani's win: "New Yorkers faced a clear choice - between hope and fear - and just like we've seen in London - hope won. Huge congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his historic campaign.
"This is a seismic victory - not only for the people of New York, but for all those who believe that humanity and hope can prevail.”
And Corbyn’s fellow Your Party founder Zarah Sultana, echoed his comments, posting a picture of herself with Madani and saying: "The Mayor of New York City. This is what socialist representation looks like"
Likewise, Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, who himself is Jewish, said: "The Z Factor! What a morning to be on Sky News to celebrate Zohran Mamdani's win!
"Improving people's lives. Focusing on inequality and empowering communities. This is how you do it."
Mamdani, a trenchant critic of Israel, also faced allegations of antisemitism during his campaign, which he has strongly denied.
He has drawn criticism for what some have labelled his anti-Israel rhetoric, including his claim that, as mayor, he would view policy decisions through a “BDS lens”.
In a 2023 video that went viral during the campaign, he said: “When the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF.”
However, in his acceptance speech, he pledged to "never waver" in the fight against Jew-hate.
"We will build a city hill that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism," he told supporters.
And, in one of his first social media posts since winning office, he condemned an antisemitic attack on a local yeshiva, which saw the building daubed with swastika graffiti.
"This is a disgusting and heartbreaking act of antisemitism, and it has no place in our beautiful city,” he wrote. “As mayor, I will always stand steadfast with our Jewish neighbours to root the scourge of antisemitism out of our city.”
