A Surrey man who ran and posted on online chat groups “dedicated to violent racist, antisemitic and neo-Nazi ideology” has been put behind bars.

Michael Nugent, 38, of Ashford, was sentenced to three and a half years at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday over a string of terrorism offences.

He pleaded guilty last month to five counts of dissemination of terrorist publications and 11 of possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Two counts of encouraging terrorism were ordered to lie on file.

The court was read parts of Nugent's diary in which he said ethnic minorities should be "sent home" and "sterilised".

"We are being genocided in our own homes," read one extract.

"Terrorism is the only way out of it."

Nugent shared material on how to make explosives and firearms as well as a video of the Christchurch Mosque terror attack, Counter Terrorism Policing said.

Police said Nugent ran and contributed to several “extreme right wing chat groups” on Telegram, using different personas to share his “abhorrent extremist” views.

Judge Peter Lodder QC told the court Nugent “posted toxic offensive material to websites and administered groups which were dedicated to violent racist, antisemitic, and neo-Nazi ideology,” according to multiple media reports.

"You used your channel as a safe haven to post messages expressing and encouraging extreme racial hatred and violence towards black people, and in setting up this channel you provided others with access to terrorist publications and encouraged terrorist acts,” the judge reportedly said.

Counter Terrorism Commander Richard Smith said the case showed “how harmful online extremism is.”

“That is why it is important that anyone who believes that they have a friend or loved one who they think has been radicalised, or is vulnerable, seeks help,” he said.
