A defiant Dame Maureen Lipman has said she “refuses to be cancelled”, but revealed that she has been forced to hire security guards for her forthcoming theatre tour, after she was targeted by anti-Israel activists.

The actor and JC columnist, who has long been vocal about her support of Israel, was the subject of a campaign by a pro-Palestinian group in May, which called for the tour to be scrapped due to her Zionist views.

The play, Allegra, which Lipman describes as being about a “relentlessly happy” woman, had its opening night on May 26 at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen.

“I am forced by government inaction on antisemitism to hire security for the tour,” she wrote in an op-ed for the Spectator. “A few bigots in Aberdeen have been campaigning to get the show cancelled because of my support for Israel, which they describe as ‘extremist’ and, for good measure, ‘hateful’.
