Jewish anti-occupation protesters crash talk by Israeli Ambassador Hotovely

The demonstrators claim the envoy has ‘racist views’

Jewish anti-occupation protesters crashed a talk last night by Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely to protest against what they claim to be her “racist views”.

Holding banners that read “racism isn’t kosher” and “stop hosting Hotovely,” the activists disrupted the Zionist Federation run event at Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue.

Na’amod, the group that organised the demonstration, said on Twitter: “Tzipi Hotovely is an anti-Palestinian racist who supports a single, apartheid state in Israel-Palestine.”

The Israeli embassy did not comment on the allegations.

Posters brandished by them at the event condemned the ambassador for “Nakba denial” and her alleged support for Lehava, an Israeli group that opposes mixed relationships between Jews and non-Jews.

Those attending the event claimed it suffered little disruption, however.

Kay Bagon said Ms Hotevely was “unphased” by the demonstration, and continued her address without stopping.

Zionist Federation chief executive Steve Winston described Ms Hotovely’s response as “dignified,” telling the JC: “She really was very good and engaged on a personal level with the audience, particularly after the event formally finished.  She was in little hurry to leave.”

The event took place to mark Ms Hotovely’s first year in office.

In a statement, the Zionist Federation said: “Despite the disruptive actions of a very small number amongst the audience of 200, the evening was a resounding success, with the conversation between the Ambassador and Natasha Hausdorff of UK Lawyers for Israel Charitable Trust flowing seamlessly with overwhelmingly positive engagement from the audience.”
