Chabad has weighed in on whether the drug should be used for weight loss
October 30, 2025 17:15It’s the biggest health story of the last few years, and now Chabad have weighed in on the debate around Ozempic, offering a Jewish take on the controversial weight loss medication.
Originally developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, Ozempic became popular for weight loss in late 2021 and 2022 following the FDA approval of a higher-dose version called Wegovy for obesity.
In the years since, Ozempic has become a household name on both sides of the Atlantic, with other similar drugs like Mounjaro (also originally developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes) also entering the market.
Now Chabad have weighed in on the debate, asking: “Is it OK to use such medications to enhance your appearance when it's not a medical necessity?”
The short answer, they decide, is no.
Explaining how they came to their conclusion, Chabad say: “Our bodies are entrusted to us by God. They are not our own to do with as we please, but rather tools loaned to us to fulfill our mission in this world. We're obligated to take care of our health and avoid unnecessary risks.”
They also refer to a case from 1964, when a woman consulted rabbis on her plan to have plastic surgery to improve her marriage prospects. While the rabbis were apparently torn on whether, in this case, having cosmetic surgery would fall under the prohibition against self-wounding, Chabad reiterate that “although the Torah directs us to seek medical help, this does not apply to purely cosmetic ailments.”

Similarly, although Chabad ultimately rule that Ozempic is not “kosher” for weight loss, they are clear that the drug is permissible for use for its original purpose, saying: “If your doctor prescribes these or any medications, it’s a mitzvah to take care of your health and listen to your doctor.”
