A 25-year-old man has been charged following the assault of two Jewish men near a synagogue in Hendon over Shavuot, police have confirmed.
Daniel Nikzamir of Sunningfields Road, Hendon, was charged with two counts of racially or religiously aggravated assault by beating; one count of assault by beating; racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage; and criminal damage, the Metropolitan Police said.
The charges relate to an alleged assault on the same road last Thursday at around 9pm in which two Jewish men were assaulted near a synagogue. Both were left minor injuries, according to the police.
Nikzamir was arrested after being detained by members of the public, with officers arriving at the scene within 10 minutes.
Nikzamir appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Saturday 23 May where he pleaded not guilty and was bailed to appear at Harrow Crown Court on 22 June.
Detective superintendent Will Lexton-Jones, from the force’s North West Basic Command Unit, said: “Incidents of this nature rightly cause concern in the community.
“We continue to offer support to local residents, particularly to the two men who were victims of this alleged attack."
Officers across London have made over 90 hate crime arrests since the end of March, according to the Met. They include over 70 arrests for antisemitic offences.
Earlier this month, the force announced the creation of a new dedicated community protection team, initially comprising 100 officers. Announcing the move, the Met said the new would bring together “neighbourhood policing, specialist protection and counter terrorism capabilities, providing a more visible, intelligence‑led and coordinated presence focused on protecting Jewish communities across London”.
