One of the backers of the Greens’ Zionism is Racism motion praised the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying that mourning him will show the world “how loved he was”.
Niloufar Brook, who has Iranian heritage, was one of the 1,022 voters who helped pass the controversial motion on October 4.
However, in a video posted around the time of his funeral in July, she also defended Khamenei, who dissident groups claim was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Iranians in brutal security crackdowns.
According to The Times, she said: “The legacy of Khamenei has that sort of integrity and decency,” and that he had been “heavily demonised” in the West.
She also reportedly said that the cleric “died with honour”, when he was killed during Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion in February.
Mourning him, she added, would show the world “how loved he was”, she added.
The Times also reported that Brook has campaigned against British restrictions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and promoted a video in April by the Iran-UK Allies Forum, opposing the proscription.
The forum has defended the regime’s violent response to the January uprising in which tens of thousands of protesters were killed.
Brook is also alleged to have been involved with a group called Iran’s Resistance Rising, whose social media profile stated it had “solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the resistance in their fight against imperialism”.
Caroline Lucas, the former Green leader, told the Times that the party’s structure has left it “woefully exposed” to “entryism”.
The Greens and Brook have been contacted by the JC.
