The BBC is facing criticism for omitting key facts from a news story that accused Israel of operating a “de facto policy of torture”.

The article, published on its news site last week, cited as evidence a report by the UN Committee against Torture, a body which regularly reviews the records of all countries that have signed the convention against torture, taking testimony from governments and human rights groups.

Written by the BBC’s Geneva correspondent, the story failed to mention that countries with well-known human-rights violations, including Turkey, China and Russia, sit on the committee.

The story also omitted the fact that the committee reported on three countries in addition to Israel – Albania, Argentina and Bahrain – or that it also praised Israel for its “frankness”.
