A BBC football pundit has apologised for using the term “Holocaust” on live television to describe the poor performance of a team manager, saying he “didn’t fully understand” the word’s meaning.

Shay Given, a former Premier League and Ireland international goalkeeper, was speaking on Saturday on the show Final Score.

Giving his verdict on a manager of Celtic who had been sacked after 33 days, Wilfried Nancy, Given said his time in charge of the Scottish football club had been an “absolute Holocaust”.

Presenter Jason Mohammad apologised later on in the programme for the "inappropriate language" used.
