Labour activist behind attempts to prevent new rules to deal with antisemites

The Labour activist who in May told crowds at a pro-Palestinian march that “Jews are in the gutter” is at the forefront of move to stop the party introducing new rules on dealing with antisemites.

Glyn Secker is behind an emergency motion tabled ahead of this Sunday's debate at Labour's conference in Brighton expressing "grave reservations" about new measures to fast-track expulsions.

Despite his earlier suspension from the West Dulwich and Norwood Labour Party, Mr Secker has proposed the motion as a member of Lambeth and Southwark Unite Community union branch.

Labour's shadow cabinet and national executive committee (NEC) last week approved plans supported by Jeremy Corbyn to bring in a new rule allowing those deemed to have committed the most serious disciplinary cases to be expelled.

At present, serious cases of alleged misconduct need to be heard by the national constitutional committee (NCC) - meaning there can be lengthy delays before individuals are expelled.

Mr Secker - who is secretary of the Jewish Voice For Labour group - who earlier this year was filmed by the JC giving an inflammatory speech to pro-Palestinian activists and Labour members on a central London demo.

Despite his suspension, Mr Secker has exploited rules which allow Unite Community, an initiative of the Unite trade union, to have their representatives sit at local Labour branches.

Labour's new rule change - which the leadership argue is an attempt to speed up the party's chaotic disciplinary processes - has also been opposed by the Jewish Labour Movement, but for entirely different reasons.

They fear a weakening of the power of Labour's NCC will only allow Mr Corbyn and his allies to exert their politicised judgment on what constitutes antisemitism.

A JLM source told the JC: “What has Secker got to worry about? He tells a braying crowd that ‘Jews are in the gutter’ and gets let off the hook.

"He knows Seamus Milne and Andrew Murray will step in to save them as they have before.

"As has been demonstrated countless times, the party’s disciplinary process is unfit, and handing even more power to politburo apparatchiks who will do leaders’ bidding is the polar opposite of ‘zero tolerance’ to antisemitism.”

Fiona Sharpe, spokesman for Labour Against Antisemitism, said: “Glyn Secker appears to be organising an emergency motion to block plans to enable expulsions from the Labour Party for antisemitism.

"Just a few months ago, his widely reported ‘What on earth are Jews doing in the gutter?’ speech at a London demonstration should have led to his own immediate expulsion from the party.

"His case was apparently blocked by senior figures in the Labour Party hierarchy.

"Now Mr Secker is doing what his organisation always does - trying to ensure supporters of Jeremy Corbyn who hold antisemitic views continue to be protected in the Labour Party.”

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated Glyn Secker was suspended from Labour after he asked a crowd: "What on earth are Jews doing in the gutter?" This has been amended.
