Sam Mendes was one of the big winners at Sunday’s Golden Globes, scooping both the best director and best film awards.

The Jewish director’s war epic, 1917, follows the story of two young British soldiers in the First World War who were given a mission to deliver a warning of an ambush to their fellow troops.

It has won plaudits for its use of long takes, giving the movie the appearance of being filmed in one continuous shot.

1917 beat Joker, Marriage Story, The Two Popes and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman for the prestigious award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Mendes was also awarded the Best Director gong ahead of Bong Joon-ho, Todd Phillips, Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

Other big winners on the night were Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
