Sadiq Khan: 'I'm enriched by meeting survivors'

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says he is "enriched by the experience" of meeting Shoah survivors.

Speaking after hosting a Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony at City Hall, Mr Khan said: “We can’t forget the Holocaust. But also we’ve got to make sure we’re never complacent. History tells us if you forget what’s happened, you can very often repeat what’s happened.”

The ceremony was attended by a multicultural audience and was addressed by Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich and Sokphal Din, who survived the Cambodian genocide in the 1970s.

“Leading a normal life after the Holocaust was one of the biggest challenges for the bleak shadow of that time penetrates deep,” Mrs Tribich said.

“What we survivors have been able to show is that the human capacity for resilience can prevail.”

Mr Khan read an excerpt from Sir Martin Gilbert’s book about Holocaust survivors, The Boys: Triumph over Adversity.
