A student whose profile picture on a dating app showed him smiling next to a sleeping Orthodox man with a Palestine flag over his mouth has been suspended from university, which is “dealing with the matter urgently”.

The Tinder profile of the 20-year-old, Jonathan, included the fact he was a s Nottingham Trent University student.

The picture was posted on Twitter last week by a Jewish student, who asked “What the f*** is wrong with people? You see a visibly Jewish man and the first thing you think to do is take a photo of him like he’s some wild creature?

"And then to conflate his identity with a conflict thousands of miles away from the UK? I give up.”

The sticker was not placed over the man’s mouth while he was sleeping but was instead photoshopped in afterwards for the image posted on Tinder.

Nottingham Trent University responded via Twitter, saying they had been “made aware of this post, and can see that NTU is mentioned in an individual’s personal bio.

“NTU takes all allegations of hate crime, including antisemitism, very seriously, and is looking into this matter as a priority.”

The university subsequently told the Tab student newspaper that it had “launched an immediate investigation” as soon as they were made aware of the image.

They said that a university officer had already held an interview with the student, “who was about to begin his first year of study here.

"This individual has been suspended from the university pending the conclusion of the internal disciplinary process.”

When the Tab asked the student about the picture, he said it was “indeed a terrible picture, absolutely insensitive and should not have been taken in the first place."

He also claimed he was “in no way antisemitic or have any kind of prejudice towards Jews".
