Mirvis: 'Pass Tebbit test'

articlemain

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has urged minority groups to follow the Jewish community's example of integration into British life.

He encouraged them to "pass the Norman Tebbit test" - a reference to the Tory politician's call for immigrants to show loyalty by supporting the England cricket team after moving to this country.

Speaking at an interfaith event to mark the annual Benedict XVI Lecture in London on Tuesday, the Chief Rabbi said British Jews had "always given our all for our society. We have considered ourselves to be Jewish and at the same time totally British."

He said: "In a nutshell minorities need to pass the Norman Tebbit test," adding that he was proud that Jews pass that test in modern Britain.
