Cabinet Minister Michael Gove has said the allegations against one of the Conservative’s flotilla of newly-elected MPs were a “cause for concern”.

Mr Gove was asked about Hastings and Rye's new MP Sally-Ann Hart, who shared a video implying that the Jewish billionaire George Soros controls the EU, when he appeared on Sky News on Sunday.

“It is a cause of concern,” he said, “but what I cannot do is pass judgement here until that until that independent investigation has concluded.”

Asked if she would take the Tory whip, Mr Gove responded: “I don’t know the details of that.”

Mr Gove was also asked about the new Tory MP for Ashfield, Lee Anderson – who was found to be an active member of a Facebook group where conspiracy theories George Soros have also been promoted.

“I’m not aware that there is any question over Mr Anderson’s membership of the party or his being eligible for the whip.

“We do need to be scrupulous looking at the behaviour of all candidates.

“There is no place for antisemitism, for islamophobia or for any form of prejudice in our politics, but it is important that when allegations are made they are properly and promptly investigated.

Ms Hart and Mr Anderson are two of three Tory candidates who were under investigation over antisemitism claims going into the election.

Mr Gove previously spoke directly to Jewish voters on the morning after the election, telling them “you should never have to live in fear again.”
