Lib Dems speak to ex-MP David Ward after he backs Naz Shah antisemitic comments

The Liberal Democrats have confirmed that former MP David Ward has been reminded of the party’s stance against antisemitism after he backed a Labour MP’s Jew-hate comments.

Mr Ward was elected as a Lib Dem councillor in Bradford in last Thursday’s local elections.

Following his win he tweeted: “Credit to #NazShah for raising important issue of #US support for rogue State of #Israel”.

Labour MP Ms Shah was suspended by her own party last month for suggesting Israeli Jews should be deported to the United States.

A Yorkshire Lib Dem spokesman said: “David has been reminded of his obligations as an elected official, and the party’s commitment to reject antisemitism.”

Mr Ward, who won 2,088 votes in the Bolton and Undercliffe ward of Bradford’s Metropolitan District Council, had the Lib Dem whip removed in 2013 after he accused “the Jews” of “inflicting atrocities on the Palestinians” .

His comments ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day caused outrage in the Jewish community.

The following year, during the 2014 Gaza conflict, he wrote that he would “probably” fire a terrorist rocket at Israel if he lived in the Palestinian territories. He later apologised.

Since losing his Parliamentary seat at last year’s general election, Mr Ward has continued his controversial tweets.

On HMD in January he tweeted: “#HolocaustMemorialDay theme 'Don't stand by' we must speak out for all - including #Palestinians - who face persecution and discrimination.”

In February he wrote: “When you go to #Auschwitz it becomes clear - hatred of others is the great sin of mankind - be it a #Jew or a #Palestinian.”

He is currently studying for a Masters degree in Middle East Politics and Security Studies at Bradford University.
