A Jewish chef from Manchester has been knocked out of the BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals contest at the quarter-final stage.

Alex Dome failed to impress with his lemon and thyme marinated poussin with ravioli.

One of the judges, the Michelin star-winning chef Marcus Wareing, described his effort as “like a light English roast dinner meets Italian raviolis with spinach. It doesn’t work together.”

Mr Dome, son of Rabbi Colin Dome of Manchester, admitted: “I had loads of ideas running through my head but maybe it didn’t work as a whole,” adding: I should have tasted it all together when I was plating.”

But the 24-year-old, who works in the kitchens at Peresham Nurseries in Surrey, was pleased with his overall performance in the competition.

“I feel very happy with how far I’ve come, how I’ve competed against the other chefs” he said.

Mr Dome became interested in cooking under his mother’s influence, and trained professionally when he joined the army six years ago.
