Recorded Jewish deaths from coronavirus in the past seven days were nearly two-thirds lower than the number for the previous week.

According to the latest Board of Deputies figures, 18 victims of coronavirus received Jewish funerals from April 27 to May 4 — compared with 52 in the previous week.

Since the outbreak, 370 Jews have died from the disease, amounting just over 1.1 per cent of the 32,213 fatalities in Britain as a whole as of Tuesday.

Since Jews represent roughly 0.5 per cent of the population, the community’s losses still remain disproportionately high — but not as much as appeared earlier in the pandemic.

One explanation could be that a majority of the community live in London and the capital was hit earlier.

The Board’s figures take into account those whose death certificates record coronavirus and are based on information from the main four Orthodox burial boards in London, Orthodox boards in Manchester and two national non-Orthodox burial societies. However they exclude one or two large synagogues, as well as other regional communities.
