The largest Constituency Labour Party in the country has voted to affiliate with the pro-Corbyn Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) fringe group, with at least one Jewish member of the party subsequently submitting their resignation in protest.

At its meeting on Wednesday night, 50 members of the Hornsey & Wood Green CLP voted in favour of affiliation, 29 against, with 13 abstentions.

One Jewish member who was at the meeting wrote on social media that he felt “distraught and angry”, but said that “we went down fighting".

“The other side used laughable stock JVL arguments - talking about their own Jewish identity, denying there is any significance in community and claiming victimhood,” he said.

He added that one person who supported affiliating to JVL gave a speech that “was all about how he has been smeared by other Jews. Another speaker blamed those who had raised antisemitism during the summer as being to blame for the damage to the Labour Party.”

JVL has denied the scale of antisemitism within Labour. Its co-chair Jenny Manson has previously told the JC the claims were being exaggerated to smear the Labour leader.

She said of Labour antisemitism: "There might be very serious evidence. But I haven’t seen any of it.”

Another Jewish member of the party emailed the party's membership office after the meeting saying that she was resigning her membership in response to the vote to affiliate to JVL.

“I am utterly sickened by what the party has become”, she wrote.

“It is no longer my home and it is no longer somewhere I feel safe or comfortable as a Jew.”

Her email was shared on Twitter by Jewish actor Marlon Solomon, who said: "People who push for JVL to be affiliated to their CLPs are saying they want virtually all Jews out of the Labour Party."
