Scarlett Johansson and Sam Mendes are among the Jewish talent nominated for Baftas, Britain's premier film awards.

Sam Mendes features in this year's best British film category for First World War drama 1917.

He was one of the big winners at Sunday’s Golden Globes, scooping both the best director and best film awards.

The film follows the story of two young British soldiers who are given a mission to deliver a warning of an ambush to their comrades.

It has received praise for its use of long takes, giving it the appearance of having been filmed in one continuous shot.

Ms Johansson received two nominations, one for Best Supporting Actress for her role in JoJo Rabbit, which recently won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Best Actress for her role in Netflix's divorce drama Marriage Story.

JoJo Rabbit was written and directed by Taika Waititi, who is Jewish trhough his mother’s family, who was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, as was Scott Silver for Joker.

Marriage Story charts the painful separation of a young couple played by Johansson and Adam Driver.

The new drama comedy which director, Noah Baumbach admitted is loosely based on his own divorce from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, also secured him a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Casting director Nina Gold also received a nomination for Joker, which led the Bafta film nominations with 11.
