The Jewish Labour Movement has nominated Owen Smith for the Labour leadership by a landslide.

Some 92 per cent of the members voted for the Welsh MP who is challenging Jeremy Corbyn.

The organisation balloted its members last week, with just under 59 per cent of eligible members taking part.

Mr Corbyn won just four per cent of the votes, the same amount as those who voted for the movement not to nominate anybody.

JLM's UK branch is a successor to the Poale Zion movement, which was founded to promote the Zionist ideal within Labour in the early part of the 20th century.

The movement contains UK parliamentarians and local councillors, as well as both party members and supporters. It is understood that the JLM currently has between 1,500 and 2,000 members.

The movement was approached for a statement, but declined to comment.
