A comedy about a 1950s Jewish housewife in New York has won Best Television Series at the 2018 Golden Globe awards.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was honoured at Sunday’s ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

Midge Maisel, the Jewish housewife, who suddenly finds herself battling it out on the stand-up comedy scene after her husband leaves her, is played by Rachel Brosnahan.

Brosnahan took home the Best Actress award for a television comedy.

In an interview after the ceremony the actress told the Hollywood Reporter: “I spent a lot of my life with people telling me I wasn’t funny and losing jobs because I wasn’t funny, so this is all new to me.”

The Amazon series won over fellow nominees ABC’s family comedy “Black-ish,” Showtime’s “Master of None,” and “SMILF,” as well as NBC’s revival of “Will & Grace.”
