Swastikas fly high in Guernsey

articlemain

The leader of Jersey's Jewish community has voiced his dismay at reports of high demand for neo-Nazi memorabilia in another of the Channel Islands, Guernsey.

The Guernsey Press reported that a fancy dress shop in Lower Vauvert was having to restock its collection of Nazi flags, because they had proved so popular.

Fancy That manager Jo Francis said the shop had just one swastika flag left from their original bulk order.

Stephen Regal, president of the Jersey Jewish Congregation, said he was writing to the Bailiff of the Island to express the community's distress. Thee are thought to be eight Jewish families on Guernsey.

He said: "It's a total outrage. Guernsey's behaviour both during and subsequent to the Occupation, even extending to the lack of support at the initial Holocaust Memorial Day, compares very unfavourably with the authorities here in Jersey."

But Ms Francis said she did not find the display of Nazi flags or swastikas offensive. "It doesn't bother me. I'm a Guernsey girl, I know the history but I think, each to their own. If we don't sell it, they'll buy it online, and I'd rather they supported a local business. We can't afford to turn down business."
