The Scottish National Party has pledged to protect kosher slaughter if it forms part of the British government after May 7.
Shechita is overseen in Scotland by the Rabbinical Commission for Licensing of Shochtim, under the auspices of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.
A spokeswoman for the SNP, whose manifesto was released this week, said: “We do not propose to change this position, or therefore the Chief Rabbi having direct authority in Scotland.”
She added: “We have no proposals to change current arrangements regarding shechita, including importing kosher meat and poultry into Scotland.”
The SNP manifesto echoed Labour leader Ed Miliband’s call to recognise an independent Palestine.
The policy document read: “We will call on the next UK government to pursue a two state solution for Israel and Palestine and to support the formal recognition of a Palestinian state.”
