Rabbi Maurice Michaels of Bournemouth Reform says university has 'no ethical standing'

A rabbi has rebuffed an approach from Bristol University to help with a research project in protest at the institution’s stance over controversial academic Professor David Miller.
Professor Miller, a sociologist, has been under investigation by the university since March after labelling Jewish society members “pawns” of a “racist foreign regime” but is due to teach next term.
Rabbi Maurice Michaels, who ministers to Bournemouth Reform Synagogue, says he was asked by an organiser of the Bristol-based project, which is looking at families where the parents are separated, to circulate a poster about it to encourage people to take part.
It had received the “ethical approval” of the university, he was told.
But Rabbi Michaels responded that while normally he would lend his support, “I am afraid that I cannot as it refers to the ethical approval of Bristol University, which fills me with horror. Bristol University has no ethical standing whatsoever as far as I and the Jewish community as a whole is concerned.”
The university was approached for comment.
The Union of Jewish Students has accused Bristol of dragging its feet over the investigation, while earlier this week Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick wrote to the university warning that “any inaction now risks the most serious damage to the reputation of your university”.
