Several pro-Gaza independent candidates, including an 18-year-old who objected to “free mixing” between men and women, were elected to Lancashire County Council in the local elections.

The independents are now the third largest group on the council, behind Reform UK who won 52 seats and the Conservatives on eight.

Maheen Kamran told PoliticsHome that she was motivated to enter politics by the “genocide” in Gaza.

She also said she wanted to end “free mixing” between men and women: “Muslim women aren’t really comfortable with being involved with Muslim men. I'm sure we can have segregated areas, segregated gyms, where Muslim women don't have to sacrifice their health.”
