Naomi Alexander showcases her shul paintings in Lithuania

articlemain

Artist Naomi Alexander has recently returned from Lithuania, where she is exhibiting her work at the Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum in Vilnius. The opening was attended by the United States ambassador to Lithuania, John Cloud.

The exhibition features a collection of paintings of Lithuanian Jewish homes and synagogues, which Ms Alexander has completed over the past six years.

“This is the first time that deep emotion has gone into my work and not just technical ability,” Ms Alexander, 69, who has Lithuanian roots,  tells People. She has been asked to do a similar project in the Baltic and Arab countries. A member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Ms Alexander was awarded her first art prize by the JC in 1948, aged ten, for a painting she did of Moses in the bulrushes.

In 1998, she was invited by the late Duke of Devonshire to paint the attics of Chatsworth. She has also been commissioned to create a version of  Harold Macmillan in the House of Commons for Sir Richard Storey of the Portsmouth & Sunderland newspaper groups, and is the author of Once Upon a Time in Lithuania (David Paul Books).

A grandmother-of-two, she lives in Hampstead Garden Suburb, North-West London.
