Parliament may debate Netanyahu arrest as petition gains 105,000 signatures

articlemain

A petition calling for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he arrives in London this week has passed 100,000 signatories, meaning a parliamentary debate could be held on the issue.

Opponents of the Israeli leader have campaigned for him to be detained on suspicion of war crimes.

Mr Netanyahu is due to arrive in London on Wednesday for a series of top-level meetings with politicians, including his British counterpart David Cameron.

The petition reached 105,000 over the weekend, meaning it could now trigger a debate in Parliament.

Despite the number of signatories, Mr Netanyahu cannot be detained here as foreign leaders and ministers have diplomatic immunity from arrest.

The Stop the War Coalition and Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan to protest outside Downing Street on Wednesday lunchtime.

Plans for a counter-demonstration have been announced by a coalition of pro-Israel groups.

The Zionist Federation, Board of Deputies, Sussex Friends of Israel, We Believe group, and Jewish Leadership Council will congregate in Whitehall in solidarity with Mr Netanyahu and his country.
