A Palestinian woman has won a claim of racial discrimination against a London-based charity that supports Middle-East co-existence because she was paid less than a former Jewish worker.
But London Central Employment Tribunal rejected her claim of unfair dismissal from the UK Friends of the Bereaved Families Forum (FBFF).
Sana Knaneh started in August 2018 as development director of FBFF, which supports the Parents Circle/Families Forum, an organisation that brings together Israelis and Palestinians who have lost children in the conflict.
Her salary was £27,000 a year. But when she learned that a Jewish part-timer who had previously worked for the charity for the equivalent of £42,000 a year, she unsuccessfully sought a raise.
As tensions grew, Ms Knaneh complained of FBFF’s “bullying and disrespectful attitude”.
But she was dismissed in March 2020 on a number of grounds which included refusing to accept the charity’s choice of her line manager and sending what it called “aggressive” emails to trustees. “It was clear to us that it had become impossible to manage the claimant,” the tribunal said.
