Nottingham Trent university has expelled a student who posted a picture of himself on a dating app pointing and laughing at a sleeping Orthodox man on the London underground, having photoshopped a Palestinian flag over his mouth.

The 20-year old student, identified as Jonathan, had been due to start his first year at Nottingham Trent, but was suspended by the university earlier this month while an internal disciplinary process was underway.

As reported by the Tab student newspaper, a spokesperson for the university confirmed on Thursday that “a student has been permanently excluded from the university, relating to offensive content which circulated on social media in September.

“This behaviour was completely unacceptable and is not recognised as part of our university’s culture."

Jonathan had posted the picture as a profile photo on the Tinder dating app, which included the information that he was a student at the university.

It was forwarded to a Jewish student, who publicised it, asking: “What the f*** is wrong with people? You see a visibly Jewish man and the first thing you think to do is take a photo of him like he’s some wild creature?

"And then to conflate his identity with a conflict thousands of miles away from the UK? I give up.”

When the Tab originally asked Jonathan about the picture, he admitted that is was “terrible”, but claimed to be “in no way antisemitic.”
