Shabbat services were cancelled yesterday at one of the USA’s largest Reform synagogues in Texas after warnings of a security threat.

Temple Beth-El in San Antonio, which was founded in 1874, took action following a warning issued by the local Jewish federation that “all formal Jewish gatherings be suspended until further notice”.

American media said that a man was in custody and the San Antonio Jewish Federation issued an update statement that there was “no known imminent threat”.

The Anti-Defamation League, which had been in touch with the FBI, said that before Shabbat it had received notice of a “specific and credible threat”.

Four people including the rabbi were taken hostage during Saturday morning prayers at another Texas synagogue in Colleyville last year. The armed assailant, who was from the UK, was shot dead by police.

Fatal attacks were launched on synagogues in Pittsburgh in 2018 and in Poway, California the following year.
