The Islamist terrorist who last week attacked Heaton Park Synagogue, resulting in the deaths of two Jewish community members and the injuring of three others, had been reported to police by concerned neighbours well in advance of the attack, according to The Guardian.

Residents said they had warned police that Jihad al-Shamie and a family member were becoming “radicalised” and were attempting to “preach” the Quran to local children, the newspaper reported.

Police previously said al-Shamie, 35, was not known to counterterrorism officials before the Yom Kippur car ramming and stabbing attack that left two worshippers dead on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

According to one neighbour quoted by the Guardian, “everything changed” during the Covid pandemic when al-Shamie and a relative began wearing traditional Islamic dress, preached Islam to people on their street and hosted “private” gatherings in the garden with other Muslims.
