Natalie Portman will star as the Goddess of Thunder in the next instalment of Marvel’s Thor movies, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Ms Portman, who is Jewish, plays Dr Jane Foster in the franchise, the love interest of Thor, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth who gains his superhero powers in the film, set to be released in 2021.
Her character's new status was revealed at the latest Comic Con when she walked out on stage holding a replica of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, which can only be wielded by ‘worthy’ individuals.
The film is the second Thor movie to be directed by Taika Waititi – whose mother is of Jewish descent – and his third appearing as the character of Korg.
Mr Waititi said that Ms Portman would not be taking over the role of Thor, but will be called Mighty Thor.
The movie is to be based on a 2014 comic book storyline in which Thor loses his abilities but Jane Foster is able to wield his powers.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Mr Waititi said: “She’s not called Female Thor. In the comics, she’s called the Mighty Thor.
“I couldn’t be more happy and excited.”
