An MP has denounced the "absolutely disgusting antisemitism" of a branch of the pro-Jeremy Corbyn group Momentum, after it disparaged calls from Jewish community groups for Labour to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.
Ilford South MP Mike Gapes denounced Redbridge Momentum's tweet, which said: “If Jews want Labour to adopt a nonsense declaration that associates criticism of the racist apartheid state of Israel with antisemitism, then let them be pissed off – the rest of the world can see through the nonsense”.
The group has previously declared that if “the Sikh community or Muslim community came up with a definition like the Jews it would be laughed at”.
Mr Gapes has reported the group to national Labour officials, the local Redbridge Labour group and to Momentum founder Jon Lansman. "There should be no place in the Labour Party for those responsible," he said.
Board of Deputies vice-president Amanda Bowman said: “Redbridge Momentum demeans itself with its crude comments about Jews. We call on Momentum nationally to take action against whoever is tarnishing their brand with these embarrassing rants.”
A Momentum source told the JC: "We have a zero tolerance approach to antisemitism and we'll be investigating these comments thoroughly."
