Labour's Jess Phillips says party's bid to heal rift must not be 'box checking exercise'

She said her party had 'lost all credibility to speak about minorities through its handling of antisemitism'

Labour's Jess Phillips has warned her party's attempt to win back the support of the Jewish community must not be a "box checking exercise".

Speaking at Sunday's Board of Deputies meeting in Birmingham, the former Labour leadership candidate said that, under Jeremy Corbyn, her party had "lost all credibility to speak about minorities through its handling of antisemitism".

Ms Phillips, who stood unsuccessfully in the current Labour leadership contest, said it was now fundamental that the party had to do "much, much ,much more to rebuild those bridges".

The MP for Birmingham Yardley said her movement was still "a long way off" making up for "turning against people so badly".

Ms Phillips said that personally she would not feel Labour had "gone far enough" until Jewish MP Luciana Berger "feels she could return to the Labour Party.

"For me that is the ultimate test. Not just because she is a dear friend of mine but of all those who departed she feels the most fervent about what the party has to do."

Ms Phillips also called for Labour to engage "fully" with the Jewish Labour Movement to ensure the group did not feel as though they were "tokenistically consulted on."

She added: "I know what it feels like to be in that room where somebody feels like they have to tick that box by talking to you."

Ms Phillips said Labour must work to "bring back on board our Jewish brothers and sisters" and said she respected those within her party who were unable to tell members of the community to vote for Mr Corbyn's party at the last general election.
