A Jewish student at Glasgow University smeared as “the Lobby” by an academic says her complaint to the college has yet to be resolved over a year later.

The undergraduate first raised her concern about social media posts of lecturer Muir Houston early last year.

But 14 months on, the student claims Glasgow is “blatantly delaying” the results of its investigation. Claiming the process has “zero credibility”, she added: “There is so much back and forth of me asking for an update and even more excuses.”

In March 2021, she had emailed Mr Houston to ask why he had supported sociologist David Miller, who called Bristol University Jewish Society “pawns” of a “foreign regime”.

Less than an hour after her email was sent, the Twitter account @Muir TDM posted: “Email received from the Lobby”, quoting from her message.

In another post, he said that Jewish Labour MP Louise Ellman was working at the “behest of a foreign power”. A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson told the JC the posts, which appeared to breach IHRA , require “urgent action”.

The student made a complaint which was upheld. Yet, despite having signed up to the IHRA definition of antisemitism, Glasgow did not commit to any concrete action against Dr Houston.

On 28 March, its chief operating officer told the student Mr Houston had been the subject of a formal disciplinary process that led to “appropriate action” being taken.

But details of that action cannot be shared “without breaching legally enforceable data protection rights,” an email seen by the JC shows. Dr Houston remains listed as a senior lecturer on Glasgow University’s official website.
