The World Health Organisation (WHO) has claimed that its warehouse and staff accommodation in Deir al-Balah were attacked by the IDF yesterday.
The military launched its first ground operation in the city since the start of the Gaza War, despite concerns from hostage families that it could endanger the abductees believed to be held there.
During the incursion into the south-eastern section of the city, the WHO said its facilities had come under attack from Israeli forces, including a building used to house staff and their families.
A spokesperson for the global health body said: “Israeli military entered the premises, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot toward al-Mawasi amid active conflict.
“Male staff and family members were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated on the spot, and screened at gunpoint.
"Two WHO staff and two family members were detained. Three were later released, while one staff member remains in detention.”
They added that the buildings occupants were “exposed to grave danger and traumatised” and called for the immediate release of the remaining staff member in custody.
However, the IDF has insisted that it came under fire in the area and that all arrests were of people suspected of participation in terrorism.
A military spokesperson told the JC: “IDF troops identified shots being fired toward them in the Deir al-Balah area, and responded toward the area from which the shooting originated.
“Prior to the start of IDF activities in the area, the IDF warned the civilian population to evacuate from the area for their safety, and was in contact with the international organisations working in the area.
"As part of IDF activity against the terrorist organisations in the area, the troops detained several individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism.
"After questioning in the field, the majority were released and evacuated from the area in coordination with the international organisations. It should be emphasised that the suspects are treated in accordance with international law.”
Addressing allegations of strip searches, they added: “At times during field questioning, it is necessary for individuals suspected of terrorist activity to temporarily remove parts of their clothing in order to ensure that they are not concealing explosive belts or other weapons.
“The IDF will not refrain from operating in areas where terrorist activity threatens the security of the State of Israel.”
