A sefer Torah is being added to the cargo of an IDF submarine for the first time.

All army bases in Israel are equipped with a scroll, but until now those serving underwater have been mostly secular Israelis and they have not asked for one to go with them.

However with the arrival of a group of Orthodox recruits to the submarine unit, this is set to change.

But because on a submarine space is very limited, the scroll that has been donated is 75 per cent smaller than normal.
