A ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been announced by US President Donald Trump.
It will begin at 10pm (GMT) today.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “I just had excellent conversations with the Highly Respected President Joseph Aoun, of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel.
“These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a ten Day CEASEFIRE at 5pm EST [10pm GMT].”
On Tuesday, Lebanon's Ambassador to the US Nada Hamadeh Moawad and Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter met US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, marking the first time the two countries had met in 34 years.
Trump continued in his post: “I have directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, together with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Razin' Caine, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a Lasting PEACE.”
And, in a separate post, he said he would be inviting both countries’ leaders for talks at the White House.
"I will be inviting the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu, and the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, to the White House for the first meaningful talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983, a very long time ago,” he wrote.
"Both sides want to see PEACE, and I believe that will happen, quickly.”
Speaking ahead of prospective talks this morning, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said: “The ceasefire requested by Lebanon with Israel is the natural starting point for direct negotiations between the two countries.”
Hebrew media is reporting that Netanyahu has convened a meeting of his security cabinet to discuss the ceasefire this evening.
