Israel's second-longest serving prime minister has been laid to rest in Jerusalem.
Yitzhak Shamir, who died on Shabbat, was 96.
He was buried, as is customary for Israel's leaders, at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, in the presence of his children and their offspring, as well as the current Israeli prime minister and president. Also in attendance were Benny Gantz, the IDF chief, and Sephardic chief rabbi, Shlomo Amar
President Peres, who worked with Mr Shamir when the two were in coalition together in the 1980s, described the former politician as "a leader who followed his path until he departed this world". He said that although he and Mr Shamir came from different political perspectives, he viewed him as "one of the best leaders of Israeli democracy."
