A photo of an apparently starving child in Gaza published by several news outlets last week lacked vital context regarding the boy’s medical history, media monitors have said.

Pictures of Mohammed Al-Matouq, an emaciated toddler living in a tent in Gaza City, have been shared widely across social media and in newspapers, supposedly as evidence of widespread starvation in the Strip.

Placing one of the images on its front page, the Daily Express called it “a horrifying image encapsulating the ‘maelstrom of human misery’ gripping Gaza”.

Meanwhile, the BBC aired an interview with the photographer who took the pictures under the headline: “The story behind the harrowing photograph of a starving Gaza baby.”
