A convicted Palestinian criminal who was released in order to secure the freedom of Gilad Shalit has been arrested near Hebron.

Ayman Sharawna was one of the 1,027 prisoners – including some serving life sentences – released early in the exchange deal last year.

He was freed in the first stage of the swap in October, the same day that Sergeant Shalit returned home after more than five years as a Hamas prisoner.

The Israeli military said that Sharawna was detained during the night in Dura, near Hebron, "on suspicion of activity that endangers the security of the area".
