On this day: Battle of Beersheba

During World War One, Australian horsemen sent by British General, Edmund Allenby, attacked the Turkish army and conquered the city of Beersheba.

This attack on October 31st 1917, marked the beginning of the end for 1300 years of Muslim rule in Israel.

Six weeks later, Jerusalem was captured and for the next 31 years, Israel would be ruled by the British high commissioner.
